Live Review: LISTEN: Movement 'Like Lust'

3 March 2014 | 4:55 pm | Edmund Kirkwood

Sydney trio Movement are set to release their self-titled EP on April 25, 10 months since we first got a taste of their music.

It can take artists years - even decades - to attract and build the kind of attention and hype that is needed to launch careers and quit day jobs.

Maintaining that reputation is sometimes even harder, and not nearly as common (see everyone one hit wonder ever). In an industry where there is just so much new music being made every day, 'making it' doesn't happen overnight.

It may as well have for Sydney trio MOVEMENT, who are set to drop their self-titled debut release on April 25, only 10 months since we first got a taste of their music. Not long after that they were snatched up by the music genii over at Modular records and have kicked it up a gear - supporting Solange on her Australian tour; touring overseas and being heavily involved in festivals all around Australia.

A new track has just been released, aptly named to - what I can only imagine - reflect our feelings toward their music. Like Lust is a real smooth jam, complete with those trademark ethereal vocals - the unsurprising champion of this tune - that can't decide whether to haunt or charm your ears the whole way through the track. They work so well stacked up against a relentless kick drum, some resonating cymbals and the creamiest of synth sounds.

It's a simple track that builds and builds, and you don't know how precious each layer of sound is until it's taken away from you, to create a void that you can't even begin to fill.

In a match truly made in Heaven, MOVEMENT will be supporting DARKSIDE in Melbourne and Sydney, and I daresay you might just cop a heap of unreleased music of the EP - as well as some of their older music. If you could call 10 months 'old'.
