Live Review: LISTEN: Cloud Nothings 'Psychic Trauma'

4 March 2014 | 12:49 pm | Hannah Galvin

Cloud Nothings have dropped their single 'Psychic Trauma', taken from their forthcoming album Here And Nowhere Else.

Nestled within the depths of watery Ohio are three guys who make up the gritty, thrash trio CLOUD NOTHINGS. Recently announcing their fourth release, Here And Nowhere Else, they've dropped the album's first two singles; the second being their latest, 'Psychic Trauma'.

For those of you familiar with the material off the subsequent release, Attack On Memory (2012), you'd realise how much cleaner the latest work we've heard thus far appears to be; particularly the forthcoming album's first single 'I'm Not Part Of Me'. This may be due to the fact that singer-songwriter Dylan Baldi has announced, "I was feeling pretty good about everything so I just made stuff that made me happy. I had nothing to be angry about really so the approach was more positive and less 'fuck everything.'"

Yeah that's an honest statement, but reminisce a little deeper to remind yourself that Attack On Memory was actually facilitating a variety of tones within it's respective environment; for there were heavy drums, thin guitars, hoarse vocals, neatly expelled lyrics and controlled instrumentation altogether. Compare this diversity to your expectations of a lighter packed forthcoming release to experience a reassessment; as for now, prepare for just as much as a mix as found in the third album. A good way to start believing this is after hearing 'Psychic Trauma'.

Easing into a very calm and collected arrangement of a slow 4/4 drum pattern, simplistic guitar line and extremely subtle bass, 'Psychic Trauma' picks up where 'I'm Not Part Of Me' left off; shedding a different light on the band as these tracks appear to sound not as nearly as heavy as those off Attack On Memory. Listen on though to find that this has been a deception.

By the time we've interacted with the chorus, the track builds up to our hopes as it showcases the great noise that we love the band so much for - a doubled-speed, intricate composition and the raw, throaty vocals of singer-songwriter Dylan Baldi. Practicing these qualities that are undeniably intrinsic to the nature of Cloud Nothings, the boys have crafted a ballsy, punchy track that sits exactly where we want the new material to be.

Cloud Nothings' 'Psychic Trauma' is the second single taken from their fourth record, Here And Nowhere Else, set for it's Australian and New Zealand release on Friday, 28th March via Stop Start.
