Live Review: SOUNDCLOUD WRAP: I Oh You DJs

22 January 2014 | 3:43 pm | Gabe Gleeson

Scott Armstrong is the man behind the I Oh You blog, more often than not you can catch him at the helm of I Oh You DJ sets across the country.

SCOTT ARMSTRONG is the man behind the curation of the I OH YOU blog and their famous 'FROTH OF THE DAY' series. More often than not you can catch him at the helm of I OH YOU DJ sets across the country.

It all started way back in 2009. Four Melbourne housemates throw a big house party to raise funds for an overdue gas bill; the bash is a huge hit with punters (and local police); the housemates realize that throwing parties is probably the most fun way to pay for utilities; and I OH YOU is born.

Once contained within a share house, I OH YOU has spread across Australia, throwing more wild parties, touring international talent (SLEIGH BELLS, EARLWOLF, TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS) and putting out local artists, including SNAKADAKTAL, DZ DEATHRAYS and VIOLENT SOHO via I OH YOU Records.

The I OH YOU blog gives a sneak peek into the musical passions and obsessions behind this frenzy of activity. With exclusive features on new sounds from around the globe, the blog has shaped the tastes of savvy listeners and become an influential voice in the Australian music scene.

Now, I OH YOU are showing off this eclectic expertise, using their ear for a big tune to play DJ sets at festivals and parties across the country.

There are two sides to I OH YOU DJs. The first is a party monster—hands-in-the-air, anything-goes anthem-dropping to sweaty dance floors. The second is a tastemaker—keeping bodies moving on carefully curated trips through fresh sounds and new obsessions. Just ask crowds from Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival and Parklife... whatever mode they’re in, they keep the party going like they need to pay a gas bill.

Since SCOTT will be playing our PURPLE SNEAKERS X RED BULL 'NO NOISE NIGHTCLUB' @ BIG DAY OUT in Sydney on Sunday January 26, we thought we'd invite him to curate our 'SoundCloud Wrap'. He chose 10 sounds he's digging this week...

JUST BLAZE & SINJIN HAWKE 'One'

'This is a really dynamic sound coming from two incredibly inspiring producers. Very wavey.'

BLACKSMIF '23 Waist' (STAR SLINGER Remix)

'Star Slinger consistently provides such high energy remixes. Loving the Baltimore vibes.'

BLOOD ORANGE 'Chamakay' (COUSIN COLE Edit)

'Blood Orange had one of the best albums of last year and I really like this dancefloor-ready twist on Chamakay. It sounds right.'

JAMES BLAKE '40455'

'This one took me by surprise. It’s a real progression from anything on Overgrown. This is definitely one for the headphones…Also the outro is really great.'

JOHN TALABOT '08-01'

'John Talabot never ceases to amaze. If this is just a demo, I can’t even begin to wonder how the follow up to ‘fin’ will sound.'

SNAKADAKTAL 'The Sun II' (JUST KIDDIN Remix)

'We just featured this on our blog. It’s a really interesting mix of two very distinct and disparate styles.'

ANDRAS FOX 'Roof To Reel Live Mix, 2014'

'A great live mix from one of Melbourne’s true forces in electronic music.'

JACQUES GREENE 'Can't Get Close' (SAMPHA Edit)

'Yet another masterstroke from Jacques Greene. A simple, uplifting and very effective edit of one of the best tracks of 2013!'

OSCAR KEY SUNG 'All I Could Do' (NAYSAYER & GILSUN Remix)

'This remix totally shines a different light on an already superb track. It has some super dark and moody moments…and that bassline! Ship it in.'

MOONS 'Bloody Mouth' (KAUF Remix)

'I really got into Kauf following his ‘As Much Again’ EP on Cutters Records and this is a great example of his versatile productions. Rolling synths, harmonies and beach sound effects. I’m not selling it very well, but it’s good!'
