Live Review: PREMIERE: Young Franco 'Futurefunk' EP

20 December 2013 | 3:00 pm | Lauren Payne

We are premiering the first EP by Brisbane young gun Young Franco and it's definitely bringing the funk into your holidays.

So you know about all of the stellar talent emerging out of Melbourne and Sydney but what about their little sister city Brisbane? Well let us assure you there is something special stirring up in this town...

Throughout 2013 we saw TYLER TOUCHE dominate a fair few festivals and national tours, but he's not the only young gun set to dominate the electronic world heading into next year. YOUNG FRANCO may not be as young as TYLER TOUCHE, but he's definitely got the talent to take the guy on.

19-year-old JOEY DA RIN has been floating around the Brisbane dance scene for quite some time and after spinning the decks as a resident at Bowler Bar for a while, he's has finally released his debut EP called FUTUREFUNK. It's chock-full of sweet club tracks that you'll no doubt be playing well into the new year.

FUTUREFUNK just rolls on in and surprises you with the vast array of sounds that have been thrown in. When you think you know what you're in for, the producer dives in and spins the release in a completely different direction, it's good so get ready.

The first track featured is 'Take Flight (UHHH)'. With a hard yet steady introduction, the opener wears a pretty awesome airline safety message to bring in the disco-esque track before booming with bright synths and smooth NILE RODGERS esq guitar samples. The good news is, this is only the beginning.

'FAT' takes a more tropical approach, channeling in something akin to that Australian Sound you may have heard people talking about. With pretty funky tropical synths jumping through this track, it takes you to a more summery part of your mind and just kind of leaves you somewhere hidden in a place resembling the tropics, only with every colour emphasised.

'd.r.e.a.m' brings back the disco influence however it's not exactly like what you have previously heard. This track leaves the guitar track behind and heads for melodic synths, paired with a smooth and soulful vocal track. This is the kind of stuff roller discos are made of.

'Fast Heart' ends FUTUREFUNK on a wonderful note with some uplifting vocals leading the march with a solid beat and lovely melody following close behind.
