Live Review: LISTEN: Cults 'High Road' (Baio Remix)

17 December 2013 | 11:35 am | Lauren Payne

Baio is back with another bright remix of an originally dark track.

Over the last couple of months Chris Baio who you may recognise from VAMPIRE WEEKEND, has been hard at work with his electronic solo side project pumping out tracks left right and centre that we can't help but love.

Not too long ago BAIO's second EP Mira was released thanks to our good mates at Future Classic, who work with acts like FLUME, CHARLES MURDOCH and TOUCH SENSITIVE. The EP brought the catchy tracks 'Mira' and 'Banj' to life, but it's not only BAIO's originals that have caught our eye, his remixes have been lingering in our ears for some time as well.

The latest remix to come out of BAIO's catalogue is a nice little ditty called 'High Road', released by New York alternative duo CULTS. The act have just released their second album entitled Static and 'High Road' is one of the many highlights on the record. The New York music scene seems to have some hidden gems in amongst the skyscrapers and Broadway billboards and BAIO seems to know all of the right artists floating around. His remix of 'High Road' is lovely and bright, much like his original work, but with a softer atmosphere.

Listening closely, you'll hear a lovely repetitive beat that BAIO has paired with some beaming synths. He seems to have created a distinctive sound for himself that can be easily recognisable by anyone who has listened to his music before. The slightly tropical vibe, the groovy break and of course the sweet melody, yeah BAIO has tweaked 'High Road' and made it his own.

CULTS original recording of 'High Road' sounds quite dark with it's heavy bass and solid drums, and somehow BAIO has transformed it into a sweet summer track that we'd be happy to dance too on a sunny day.
