Live Review: WATCH: Tame Impala Cover The Flaming Lips (Live)

3 September 2013 | 12:32 pm | Lauren Payne

Whilst touring over in Dublin, our national treasures, Tame Impala, playing a few tracks by the Flaming Lips for their fans in Dublin.

With the recent departure of Nick Allbrook from TAME IMPALA, everyone has felt a like bit of sadness. The kid had charisma and was just plain awesome, but as they say, the show must go on and Cam Avery has been helping the band push on through a recent tour of Europe.

On this tour some interesting things have been happening, one of which is that the psychedelic group have decided to cover not just one, but two songs made by the eccentric FLAMING LIPS.

The first track TAME IMPALA covered was 'Silver Trembling Hands'. The original track its self is quite crazy, with some buzzing synths, light floating vocals and a fast paced drum beat that booms over the track like giant footsteps.

Of course the Aussie quintet put their own twist on it, slowing down the initial drum beat, distorted guitars replacing the full band atmosphere, and the synths just smoothing over the track rather than shunting through like on the FLAMING LIPS' original. It's still a wonderful cover, just taken into a completely different territory by the Perth boys.

The second track the boys played was 'Are You A Hypnotist?'. Now I really like this track and it's not only because the title has a sort of mystery to it. It definitely sounds like it's more up TAME IMPALA's alley as the drum beat is quite slow, the synths are really psychedelic, and the guitars are simple with a slight melting aura.

The vocals even resemble Kevin Parker's, honestly it's like they're playing it already. After a little stumble at the beginning of the track (it's a funny little mix up at the beginning of the video) the boys break out into 'Are You A Hypnotist?' and nail it! Hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more covers form these guys in the future.
