Live Review: WATCH: Deerhunter 'Back To The Middle' (Official Video)

18 September 2013 | 5:47 pm | Hannah Galvin

Deerhunter have just dropped the clip to their track 'Back To The Middle', that features on their sixth studio record Monomania.

We're so, so excited for Atlanta five-piece DEERHUNTER to grace our shores this December. Playing Meredith Music Festival at the end of a national tour, we're growing a tad impatient on the inevitably wondrous show they're sure to deliver. In saying that, the band have thankfully kept us preoccupied [for now] with their clip to 'Back To The Middle'.

Directed by Oliver Groulx, the video documents the lonesome groove of drag startlett Durassie Kiangangu. With many comments on it being subversive, it's a delicate term only to be used in the context that this clip has been made to shape into; as well as running parallel to lyrics "You and me/You broke free/You broke me/and you left me these little pieces".

Shot in black and white with a short period of coloured footage halfway through the clip of Kiangangu elegantly getting ready, 'Back To The Middle' has sustained the contextual concept throughout the Deerhunter clip entirely.

From this though, there’s a rush of liberty felt upon viewing the clip, which resonates with the general sound of ‘Back To The Middle’. Guitars coast with drums and percussion sifting out beats consistently, giving the verses a very “whatever, I don’t care” attitude. Though by the time the chorus sounds out, the title of the song becomes strong as we awake to our true attitude and start to experience the emotion that should be felt in relation to the message of the song.
