Live Review: LISTEN: Toro Y Moi 'Slough' (Ricky Gervais Cover)

16 August 2013 | 12:32 pm | Lauren Payne

Toro Y Moi has gone out and covered a track called 'Slough' that was written by controversial comedian, Ricky Gervais.

One of the most controversial comedians of his generation, has just received the best morning message ever (in my eyes anyway). The message reads, "Dear Ricky, hope you like this cover. Peace, Chaz."

For those who are wondering why I'm making such a big deal about a guy called Chaz, let me take this moment to let you know that he's is probably better known as chill-wave wizard TORO Y MOI. So really to paint a very clear picture of what's happening here, TORO Y MOI has covered a song by Ricky Gervais, creator of The Office and An Idiot Abroad.

Mr Gervais is more well known for his strange humour rather than music, but TORO Y MOI has decided to cover Ricky's track 'Slough' which features on his Youtube channel in a mini-series entitled Learn Guitar With David Brent.

Although not many people may know this, back in the 1980's, Ricky Gervais was actually in a band called SEONA DANCING, therefore making his unexpectedly beautiful guitar skills a little easier to swallow. 'Slough' is one of the first tracks Gervais used for the online comedy series and obviously TORO Y MOI has taken a shine to the originally acoustic track.

This cover is fantastically relaxed, with eighties vibes that just flow right through, giving it a bit of a nostalgic feel. The vocals slide softly over the simple melody that echoes throughout the track and really it's just perfect for a Sunday morning spent drinking coffee and not really doing a hell of a lot.

TORO Y MOI's chill-wave tracks make a huge impact on the music scene here since there aren't many who feature the same era-mix as TORO Y MOI tends to use. In many of his tracks you can sense elements of the seventies, eighties and their early electronic elements. 'Slough' is definitely a track filled with those elements and it's just plain brilliant.

TORO Y MOI is currently touring the United States with one of our favourite electronic acts CLASSIXX, plus also appearing at Big Day Out in 2014. We can't wait for him to touch down in Australia and hopefully 'Slough' will be played in his live set.
