Live Review: LISTEN: Goldroom 'St. Ides Heaven' (Elliot Smith Cover)

17 August 2013 | 12:00 am | Lauren Payne

Goldroom pays tribute to Elliot Smith by covering his track 'St. Ides Heaven'.

We all have our idols. Some people would be very sentimental and call their parents their idols, others might call their school teachers their idols, for me personally, most if not all of my idols are musicians.

I won't bore you with the long list of my idols, but I will however share with you a track where LA born electronic producer GOLDROOM pays tribute to one of his "songwriting idols", ELLIOT SMITH. He's written a lovely letter explaining his choice of cover via his Soundcloud which is both sentimental and just plain true,

"Elliott Smith is one of my songwriting idols, simple as that. Sometimes I really feel like the emotional songwriting part of music gets a bit lost within the dance music world, which was a big reason I picked this amazing song to cover. I just wanted to try and do my best to honour such a great musician and one of my favourite songs."

His cover of ELLIOT SMITH's 'St. Ides Heaven' does exactly.

The song has a very sunny disposition with beaming synths opening the track and giving it the light you'd expect from someone paying homage to their idol. The beat is steady and keeps everything nice and relaxed as it flows through the track. The vocals are light and just plain wistful, the whole track is pretty cheerful and bright, it's refreshing to listen to.

GOLDROOM is releasing a new EP on November 9, which he says is his reason for releasing this. The release is entitled The Embrace EP and consists of six new tracks, 'St. Ides Heaven' is also available as a free download via GOLDROOM's Soundcloud.
