After dropping his studies in fashion and design to focus solely on music, Detroit-based electronic artist, Jimmy Edgar has snatched all kinds of influences from jazz, funk, street beat and r&b.

Recently Jimmy Edgar has collaborated with Travis Stewart AKA Machinedrum to start a new project called JETS and a label by the name of Ultramajic. Lucky for us, the electro funk master will be heading to Australia in June to play alongside Sepalcure, dOP and Simon Caldwell at Terminal Project in Sydney. We had the chance to interview him and here's what he had to say...

You’re returning to Australia in June to play at Terminal Projekt for Vivid. What are your thoughts on performing at such an amazing location on Sydney Harbour?

My thoughts are that pure excitement to get back to Australia. I don't want to make comparisons because Australia is in a body of its own, a real specific kind of warmth.

Late last year I saw you play a live set at the Astral People warehouse party. Do you have a strong connection to that brand?

They are my boys, it was one of my first times there and these people went out on a limb with me.. we never met, they loved my music. This kind of shit I have gratitude for because they brought me in and I had an amazing time. They had a successful party but I am indebted to them and the excellent time they showed me. The party was hot, literally.. fucking get a fan in that place jesus christ. Some girl passed out in the middle of the street so the cops busted it as soon as I was done. Weird after party at some apartment too, there were jaws being chewed off in every corner, freaky.

Alba, who were then known as Albatross, also played on the night and you recently remixed one of their tracks for Plastic World, a new record label founded by Vic from Astral People and James from Future Classic. How’d this all come about for you?

They asked me and I said yes. It was about a year in the making though.

I’ve noticed you’ll be playing some live shows around the world under your new project Jets, a collaborative effort between you and Machinedrum. Considering you’re both in Australia for Terminal Projekt, will we get the chance to see a Jets live show or will we have to wait until next time?

There was talk about that and it still may happen. Of course any time me and Travis are together we're up for spontaneous shit, that's how we are with everything, even the Jets project. There may be some after party with us officially, but anyway we'll be hanging out. We got flights there together too because we're coming form Japan.

Machinedrum is playing under yet another project called Sepalcure at Terminal Projekt. How do you both find time to work on so many different things at once?

When you want to do it you will make time, and fuck knows we don't have time but we make it work somehow. Thats 100% love passion.

Do you find it exciting to be playing on the same stage as him, in two separate sets?

Of course we love playing together. He is one of the closest people in my music and the respect we have for each other's art goes lifetimes deep. Trust me.

Would you say there is anything different about Australian crowds, as opposed to the rest of the world?

It's like if Asian British people were from California… that's not racist, I'm just a fucking ignorant American.

Have you been told much about what sort of 3D mapping projections we’re likely to see at your show in Sydney?

Nope, I wanna be surprised.

Other than a fairly extension touring schedule, what are some of your plans for the future?

Concentrate on my record label doing bootleg white labels and singles from us.  The label is very specifically designed as magical altars and the music will be infused with these concepts in expanding consciousness.  The artwork designed by me and Pilar Zeta.  We are creating a new kind of magick using ancient symbols and practices to get people in a vibe.
