12 January 2013 | 9:00 am | Hannah Galvin

If you're into gritty, lo-fi, obscure production, you should defs check out Shlohmo.

Are you into a bit of weird with your experimental? A bit of psychedelia with your hip hop? A bit of abstract with your funk? Look no further then SHLOHMO – an artist you should definitely be monitoring this year.

The 21 year old producer goes by the birth name Henry Laufer, hailing from the USA.

Laufer started playing around with beats when he was just 14, however never really found a purpose for it until he was 18.

Since then, the dude has been making dirty beats coated in obscurity. There’s something dark and trapped about his music, but this isn’t a bad thing; it adds to the almost futuristic vibe that is enhanced when listening to the said tunes.

The Lo-Fi beat maker has released a collection of EPs, as well as his debut LP titled Bad Vibes in 2011. He also helps run LA’s Wedidit Collective.

Alongside his own music, Shlohmo has also conceived his own interpretations of some big tracks. These were carried out as remixes, for artists such as Toro Y Moi, Souljah Boy, Drake, Little Dragon and Flume.

He’s played some festivals too, such as the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival and MoMA PS1 Warm Up.

If you like what you’ve heard so far, I’ll have you know that Shlohmo is due over here in February for not only Laneway, but his very first Australian show that he'll be headlining at Sydney’s Civic Underground. He’ll be supported by Polographia and Charles Murdoch, as well as Future Classic DJs and Astral DJs. Grab your tickets HERE.
