Live Review: LISTEN: The Prodigy 'Smack My Bitch Up' (Major Lazer Remix)

23 November 2012 | 12:00 pm | Lauren Payne

‘Firestarter’ and ‘Breathe’ are most likely the most popular tracks from The Prodigy but here today we have a remix of Smack My Bitch up from Major Lazer.

Back in the 1990s, it was all about grunge. NIRVANA was taking over with Kurt Cobain’s menacing lyrics and crunchy guitars, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS were not far behind with timeless track like ‘Today’ and ‘1979’ under their belt.

But for those who weren’t grungy in the 90s, you may have been listening to the emerging electronic artists who were breaking all the rules, like THE PRODIGY (but if you were listening to neither I can only assume SMASH MOUTH and THE SPICE GIRLS were involved).

THE PRODIGY have become electronic legends with their tracks being featured in many action movies because, they have bite. ‘Firestarter’ and ‘Breathe’ are most likely the most popular PRODIGY tracks but here today we have a remix of one track done by none other than DIPLO's now solo side project MAJOR LAZER.

Opening with some pretty fast paced synths, MAJOR LAZER’s remix of ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ keeps to the true PRODIGY mood by being aggressive and quick to the mark. Low synths accompany a fast drum beat which slowly fades from a distorted hum to a clear electronic sound until vocals burst in and say, “smack my bitch up”. The fast-paced synths play throughout the track and just make you feel like you should be running or kicking ass. A break in the the middle of the track sounds slightly less full like the rest of the track, but gives you a good rest from the rest of ‘Smack My Bitch Up’.

MAJOR LAZER has pushed this PRODIGY track to its limit and we should all tip our hats, curtsy or whatever it is you do to congratulate people. Along with this awesome remix of THE PRODIGY that MAJOR LAZER has presented us with, the man behind the mixing desk has also got another present for us.

MAJOR LAZER created a track called ‘Jah No Partial’ not long ago, and its reggae roots are the perfect sound for those lazy summer afternoons. But I’m not finished yet, along with having ‘Jah No Partial’ for your afternoons, you can have it for your nights now too thanks to YELLOW CLAW and YOUNG FELIX. MAJOR LAZER has posted a remix that YELLOW CLAW and YOUNG FELIX did of his chilled-out track and now it’s yours free to download from MAJOR LAZER’S Soundcloud!

The track has some hip-hop and reggae mashes and if that’s your thing, download it, and enjoy your early Christmas present from MAJOR LAZER!
