Live Review: LISTEN: City Calm Down 'Sense Of Self' (Ta-Ku Remix)

20 November 2012 | 1:30 pm | Lauren Payne

Perth dude Ta-Ku has taken City Calm Down's 'Sense Of Self' and created something the track has never been before.

So again, we have come back to the subject of Melbourne legends CITY CALM DOWN. After recently releasing their debut EP Movements though I OH YOU, the band have gained a loyal following - to of course accompany the already loyal followers in Melbourne - and have had Australian music lovers in a frenzy.

CITY CALM DOWN have said that they wanted their sound to be perect for their debut, and of course as hopefully all of you know by now, the final product is fantastic.

After releasing their first single 'Pleasure & Consequence', it would be assumed that Movements was going to be a very dark EP, but of course it didn't turn out that way. The second single taken from the EP 'Sense Of Self' is actually quite an uplifting tune. The light melodies flow beautifully beneath the uniquely low vocals that also have a slight happy tone to them. The synths in the track run through the track and to me, it's the synths that put the cherry on top of that mood that makes you feel like your lying underneath the stars watching fireworks.

After weeks of waiting, I OH YOU has now released the first remix for 'Sense Of Self' after teasing CITY CALM DOWN fans about the track. The 'Sense Of Self' remix has been created by Reagan Mathews, but you will all know him better as TA-KU.

You can listen to and download the remix for free via Earmilk HERE.

Opening with the original synth track, TA-KU has put his own twist on things by adding in some brief vocal burst and a twinkling synth over the original track to make 'Sense Of Self' more of an electronic piece. With more of a hip-hop beat leading the track, TA-KU has added a new flavour to 'Sense Of Self' that doesn't actually feel to different. Although TA-KU has slowed down the beat, and added some twinkling synths and voice distortion, he has kept the original mood to the entire track which is dreamy with a sense of contentment, meaning your happy with the universe.

TA-KU has released an EP entitled LATENYC which also happens to be a sneak peek of his forthcoming LP SCARLETTE, which will be fully instrumental. LATENYC is full of instrumental tracks that have been described a 'future soul music' and, LATENYC also features guest vocals by Melbourne's own CHET FAKER who also happens to be the next door neighbour of Sam Mullaly, a member of CITY CALM DOWN. Coincidence? I think not!

Movements is out now though I OH YOU and LATENYC is also out though LA label HW&W Recordings.
