Live Review: Triple J Announce Like A Version 8

15 October 2012 | 3:00 pm | Tom Hutchins

In Australia, when you think of cover versions of songs, the first thing you think of is Triple J’s weekly 'Like A Version'. The 8th compilation is out now.

In Australia, when you think of cover versions of songs, the first thing you think of is Triple J’s weekly LIKE A VERSION. You know, unless you’re into The X-Factor (no judgement). So you can understand our excitement when we tell you that edition number 8 of their Like A Version compilation is out now.

Like A Version is where some of not only Australia’s, but the worlds most impressive acts come into our youth radio networks breakfast show to cover a classic song of their choosing. And over the many years it’s been around, there has been the stigma attached that these covers are to be out of the ordinary and downright special in every way. It’s a stigma that everyone loves, and it’s one that the bands take to heart.

So really, it’s no wonder that some of the highest polling songs on Triple J’s Hottest 100 have been ‘Like A Version's’ past and often many of these acts gain a heap of new fans because of it. We’ve seen Owl Eyes, Art Vs Science, The Wombats, Florence And The Machine and more completely dismantle and rebuild their own take on what were already incredibly popular tracks.

Luckily for you, this year’s compilation is no different. The CD/DVD features 23 different artists covering some of the most interesting songs of the last decade and more. So if you wanted to hear Jinja Safari covering R.Kelly, Bluejuice covering Lana Del Ray or even Missy Higgins covering Gotye – this is the album for you.

The compilation is out right now. So go grab it from your local ABC store or online via iTUNES.
