Live Review: WATCH: Azealia Banks '1991' (Official Video)

7 September 2012 | 12:00 pm | Lauren Payne

The chameleon Azealia Banks hits us all up with the last clip off her '1991' EP; its title track '1991'.

I’m sure most people have now had their turn at witnessing what can only be described as the scandalous musings of American rapper AZEALIA BANKS.

Being in Australia only two months ago, the rapper graced the Splendour In The Grass music festival with her magnificent presence, and to the devastation of her excited- and perhaps also drunk- audience, the singer left the stage only 25 minutes into her performance. But don’t think this sassy songstress is a diva, unfortunately she was forced to leave because of technical issues and later said she was “super sorry”.

Now that all is forgiven, AZEALIA BANKS has released her new video for the title track of her beloved EP 1991. Beginning the track with shots of her leg and various other body parts, the video eases into a dance party attended by a pair of sleek looking dancers and many shots of the feisty rapper in fantastic clothes making her look like she’s just walked out of a Vogue cover shoot.

The video shows how AZEALIA BANKS has bloomed into a beautiful flower who is taking over your earphones. She is shown with such pride on her face and by pride I mean a I’m-nice-but-mess-with-me-and-I’ll-cut-you face. The clip also seems slightly more mature than the video for her debut single ‘212’. In ‘212’ the singer dances like a young teenager in her baggy jumper and her denim cut-offs, whereas in ‘1991’, the singer is poised in her large abstract chair and dances her little hand dance (you’ll see it) in her silky black blazer and trousers.

AZEALIA BANKS is somewhat of a chameleon. No matter where she is or what she’s wearing, she can pull of a kind of sass that you don’t see much of these days. To find a girl like AZEALIA BANKS you’ll have to watch some films from the sixties and find the powerful female character that is in confident herself. AZEALIA BANKS is that character hands down and is also quirky to boot (spot the cheeky face at the end of the video, I dare you) so enjoy her latest video and look forward to many more.
