Live Review: LISTEN: Crystal Castles 'Plague'

1 August 2012 | 10:30 am | Dominic Sciberras

Canadian electro maniacs Crystal Castles have returned with the first single off their upcoming third album. Dom gives us his 2 cents

Twisted. Sinister. Dark. Hypnotic. Just a few words that describe Canadian duo CRYSTAL CASTLES' latest venture 'Plague'.

Alice Glass and Ethan Kath have returned, picking up precisely where they left off. CRYSTAL CASTLES sophomore release II signalled a departure from the warped video game electronica of their debut, and 'Plague' is very much in the same vein as that follow-up.

The epic, warehouse electro-tech rave sound is ever-present, as is the drug addled, paranoia inducing, church organs (a la 'Not In Love' feat. Robert Smith). Notorious live show maniac Glass screams over the haunting electronic production, manifesting nightmarish soundscape that, like the singer herself, terrifies and mystifies.

The pair were recently announced for this years' Big Day Out tour, and these guys quite literally tear the roof off. No shit, last time they played a BDO, Glass did the last half of the tour with her leg in a brace. Apparently not her first time either.
