Live Review: LISTEN: Gossip 'Move In The Right Direction' (CSS remix)

26 June 2012 | 10:30 am | Staff Writer

How do you make gorgeous Gossip songs even better? Get CSS to remix them so that they're club-worthy. Warning: might induce eargasms.

I remember the first time I heard Beth Ditto's voice, when GOSSIP put out their single 'Heavy Cross' in 2009. I was entranced. Her voice just made me lose my shit. I started dancing right there, in a little stationary shop in Newtown as the guy I was crushing on watched aghast, wondering what he had bought on by playing me the song.

GOSSIP's songs are not repetitive at all, but there's still that same feel to them - really sassy, dramatic, and a little bit overwhelming but in the sense that they can make you forget where you are and make you want to just throw up your arms and dance along, Priscilla Queen of The Desert style with the exaggerated motions and facial expressions.

'Move In The Right Direction', track 4 from their latest album A Joyful Noise still maintains that same feel, but the lyrics are even more personal. Phrases that would usually sound cliched like "One step closer every day at a time" are sung with such emotion that you feel like Ditto really knows what she's talking about, that she's not just using that phrase out of laziness or a lack of originality but because she's used that mantra herself. There are no extraneous "oohs" and "ahhs" that simply sound like overused fillers; her moans are kept subtle, a light backing that complements whatever she's singing.

The only thing that could possibly make 'Move In The Right Direction' better would be if some really brilliant artist like CSS remixed it to add more bass, make it more reverberating and produced the kind of mix that would play in a nightclub.

Oh wait....

They did.

Forget going out, I'm pretty good just dancing to this on repeat in my bedroom.
