Live Review: LISTEN: Boomgates 'Whispering And Listening'

28 June 2012 | 12:00 pm | Staff Writer

Say hello to Boomgates. They're a talent stacked outfit based in Melbourne, creating catchy as all hell scrappy pop and we dig it.

We here at the Purple Sneakers office are suckers for supergroups, especially when the supergroup is made up of some of the best Australian acts of the past decade.

Say hello to BOOMGATES. They're a talent stacked outfit based in Melbourne, creating catchy as all hell scrappy pop. And the best part - they are comprised of members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Twerps, Trial Kennedy, Dick Diver and Teen Archer. That's a pretty big deal guys.

The band are reasonably new to the scene, with their debut show being only a year or so ago as openers for Super Wild Horses album launch - but it's already abundantly clear that they have the potential to become an act pivotal to the local music scene. Whether it be their lack of time together as a band or just pure slacker influence, an air of pure enjoyment can be heard throughout their music. The resulting imperfections come across more charming than off-putting and in our eyes, that's actually a pretty impressive accomplishment.

So without further ado, here is their new single 'Whispering And Listening'. It is the first taste from their upcoming debut album, Double Natural, to be released later in the year - and we really love it. It's another 60's influenced Surf-Rock number, with Lo-Fi guitar chords flooding the song before interchanging broad vocals of Eddy Current Suppression Ring's Brendan Huntley and Dick Diver's Steph Hughes take the track to a new level of summery awesomeness.
