INTERVIEW: Stonefield

6 May 2012 | 6:00 pm | Staff Writer

After embarking on their east coast tour, Stonefield have been selling out gigs as they prepare for the release of their new EP Bad Reality

After hitting the road for their latest Australian East Coast Tour the girls of STONEFIELD have been playing to sell out gigs as they prepare for the release of their newest EP Bad Reality of which the lead single and title track (of the same name) has been hitting the airwaves.

There is no doubt that the Findlay sisters know how to own a  stage and have been rocking it out and oozing swagger with fellow rockers Melbourne boys KINGSWOOD and The Delta Riggs. After touching down back home the girls have a breather and take the time to hit us up with an interview on their newest EP, playing at Glastonbury and what it’s really like to road trip it with Rock ‘n’ Roll boys.

Purple Sneakers: If you could describe you’re newest EP Bad Reality in three words what would they be? Why?

S: Each song has that old school rock sound and is pretty in your face. When we went into the studio we had a specific sound that we wanted to create. We didn’t want it to sound over produced and to clean. We wanted the songs to stand for themselves and to be heard as close as we could to how they are when we play live.

PS: How has the reaction to your newest ‘Bad Reality’ been whilst touring?

S: It’s been amazing. It’s still relatively new but people seem to becoming more and more familiar with it at each show and are showing a really good response when we play it. I guess because it is such a straight forward rock song it translates really well live and people can get into it pretty easily.

PS: You’ve been travelling around on your East Coast Tour with two all male rock bands, what has that been like?

S: It has been so much fun, they’re like our older brothers. It was cool having a lineup with all rock bands. We all got so inspired watching each other play and it pumped us up each time we were to go on stage. There was an awesome vibe between us and on the last show in Newcastle we got everyone up with us to jam on ‘Whole Lotta Love’.

PS: I recently went to your gig at The Standard in Sydney and saw your Mum had tagged along. Do you get up to any antics while on the road or is it pretty tame considering you’re travelling with your Mum? Do you get to live a rock’ n’ roll lifestyle full of mischief and bad behaviour?

S: It’s pretty tame. Two of the band members are underage so there are lots of restrictions when travelling around. It does sometimes feel a bit funny with mum around all the time because you have to make sure you’re not doing anything too silly but she’s pretty laid back and we never really get up to too much mischief anyway.

PS: The rock ‘n’ roll you guys are dishing out is pretty impressive for girls at such a young age, do you think if you had of grown up on a diet of say The Spice Girls rather than that of Jimi Hendrix your music would have been any different? Is listening to that old school rock what made you first want to pick up an instrument?

S: Listening to the music definitely did inspire us to first pick up our instruments. With that style of music you can relate to each instrument and really see how you can use it. When we first started playing we were a lot different, our music was heavier and more pop… if that makes sense. It was after we had written a lot more songs that we naturally found what we wanted to sound like. I think we would have found our style no matter what though. Bands like Led Zeppelin and Hendrix will always be around so I think we would’ve found them sooner or later and we would’ve ended up doing what we’re doing now.

PS: You guys have definitely been busy these last few years, winning Triple J Unearthed, playing at Glastonbury Festival and also supporting the Foo Fighters then backing it all up with this newest EP and tour… what has been the stand out experience for you?

S: It’s so hard to choose one because we have been so fortunate with every experience. Glastonbury was definitely one of the standouts though. It was our first gig overseas and we walked on stage to thousands of people at one of the most well known festivals in the world. It was an absolutely incredible feeling and an experience we will never forget.
