INTERVIEW: Sampology

10 May 2012 | 12:00 pm | Staff Writer

Sampology is headlining Can't Say this Friday. We at Purple Sneakers sat down for an interview to get to know all things on Sampology's mind.

SAMPOLOGY is an audio- visual DJ. That's right, an audio-visual DJ. He mixes film and music in a cosmic symphony of pop culture and satirical chaos. Take a step back. Breathe. This is the future we live in. We had a chance to have a quick 10 question chat with him ahead of his set at this week's CANT SAY Melbourne event...

Purple Sneakers: What’s the most rewarding thing for you when playing?

S: I get to play music I love and see people dancing to it.

PS: Your shows contain an audio as well as visual component to them, what are some of the challenges involved with including these extra elements?

S: When performing with video as part of my show I've got twice as many things to be across to put the set together so it definitely means I'm working a lot harder on stage. That said I find video a lot more rewarding because I can get a theme/feeling across way more to people than if I'm just using audio.

PS: Are there any guilty pleasures in your music collection?

S: Too many to mention; Blackbox was the first one that came to mind, I don't feel guilty though.

PS: What was the first CD you bought/owned?

S: Moby 'Play'

PS: Craziest thing that’s happened while playing?

S: Some dude slapped me on the ass while I was Djing in a club in Brisbane 4 years ago, I turned around and it was Ben Harper who drunkly asked me if I could play some hip-hop.

PS: If you could collaborate with one living and one dead artist who would they be?

S: I think I would collab on the mixing desk with one of the dub legends, King Tubby/ Lee Perry/ Prince Jammy purely to learn as much as possible from them.

PS: Most overrated thing in music today?

S: Any part of the music industry that takes away from the music itself.

PS: If you weren't going to be a DJ/musician, what would you want to be doing instead?

S: When I was a kid I wanted to be either a vet or Luke Skywalker, now I think if I had to change careers I'd enjoy working in animation.

PS: Top tracks on repeat right now?

S: Virgo Four - It's A Crime (Caribou Mix)

Metronomy - The Look (Two Inch Punch Remix)

Lightyear - Moderation

Major Lazer - Get Free

Surecut Kids - Night Games

Fantastic Mr Fox - Sanen

Kanye West - Mercy

Todd Terje - Inspector Norse

Danny Brown - Radio Song

Toto - Hold The Line

PS: Oh no! Your record collection is on fire! what do you save?

S: Why would you upset me by asking me this question :(
