Live Review: WATCH: Lowlakes ‘Arctic House’

In a time when film clips are mini feature films or porn (okay, mostly porn), it’s refreshing to watch a video that doesn’t distract from the music.  LOWLAKES are a four-piece Aussie ensemble including three lads originally from the dusty Alice Springs and one plucked from the streets of Melbourne, where the band currently resides.

At the risk of sounding lame, ‘Arctic House’ is quite a moving track. Thomas Snowdon’s vocals are full of depth and control and he has a distinctive sound which I can only imagine is pretty damn awesome live. Similar to the theory of a modest video above, Lowlakes create open and simple sounds that evoke a response but never over-clutter your ears.

Who better to explain what’s going on than the band itself? When asked in an interview with The Orange Press about the group's writing style, lead-singer Thomas responded with “What we don’t put in is largely the way we [approach] it. A minimal soundscape is how we try to write the songs. Cinematic.” I can see you nodding thoughtfully.

Their self titled debut EP is available now and my crystal ball tells me that these guys are on the way, up and fast. So why not jump on the bandwagon early? That way, you get to complain down the track about how ‘mainstream’ they’ve become.
