Live Review: LISTEN: Beck 'I Only Have Eyes For You'

29 April 2012 | 12:00 pm | Hannah Story

Beck gets a bit jazz for Doug Aitken's new art installation in Washington DC. Damn. We want to go see it too!

BECK gets very jazz here. His vocals, mixed with the lovely piano, quiet underlying bass and some brooding backing vocals makes this track quite atmospheric and interesting. It’s a real leap away from the alternative folk we’ve come to expect from the indie lord. Not that we mind, because we like jazz too.

The deal is that Beck’s cover of ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ (which first became a hit in the ‘30s for one Ben Selvin) will be spliced together with other covers, by American multimedia artist, Doug Aitken for an installation entitled ‘Song 1.’ It’s currently in Washington DC, so we’re going to have to rely on the internet to give us more of a feel for the installation which apparently involves transforming the outside of the Hirshhorn Museum into an outdoor theatre with 360° projections illuminating its walls. Other musicians who covered the track and will be apart of this amalgamation include No Age and Devendra Banhart. Pretty fucking cool, ‘ey?
