FLASHBACK: Voxtrot 'The Start of Something'

26 April 2012 | 4:30 pm | Hannah Story

Hannah gets nostalgic for that time in high school where she used to listen to mixtapes full of Voxtrot tracks.

VOXTROT got me through high school. It was perfectly corny and perfectly angst-ridden all at the same time. And this one? It was our brand spankin’ new digital coordinator, Gabe’s favourite track when he was 17. We all need a little under-age indie house party nostalgia sometimes.

It’s one of those tracks you find on mixtapes from high school and think, well, yeah, this song is still lovely. If I need him, he’s a love letter away. AWW. And it makes me sing along in that really sad lovey-dovey kind of way, “If I die clutching your photograph, don’t call me boring, it’s just ‘cause I like you.” I don’t think that’s boring! I think that’s sweet and wonderful and you’re a beautiful beautiful man. ‘The Start of Something’ all about the sweet jangling guitars, soft violins and the crooning vocals of Ramesh Srivastava and making you feel all warm inside.

The crushing day in my HSC year when I found out I couldn’t expect to hear anything else from those 4 boys was a sad sad sad day. I didn’t study. That probably goes without saying.

Conclusion: Voxtrot were empowering. I didn’t feel silly for being sad or in love. And I knew that they couldn’t break me with their gutter prose. Go listen to their EPs and their album. Just do it, and try not to break into teenage sobs.
