Live Review: FEATURE ARTIST: Daughter

2 April 2012 | 6:00 pm | Staff Writer

Daughter is making waves with her soulful lyrics and brooding melodies. Let newbie contributor Tegan show you this girl's talents.

DAUGHTER, from the UK’s ultra-cool record label Communion (owned by the guys from Mumford and Sons), are making waves with their soulful lyrics and brooding melodies. At just 21, Elena Tonra, the voice and lyricist behind Daughter, has been described as a cross between the experimental soundscapes of Bjork and the raw writing of Laura Marling.

I have to admit that my first experience with Daughter’s music came from the electronic and dubstep remixes of tracks from their The Wild Youth EP that was released in November 2011. At first a little hesitant to enter the realm of ‘experimental’ or ‘contemporary’ pop/rock folk music, depending on who you talk to, I quickly discovered that Daughter’s music transcends genre stereotypes. On further listening it became apparent that the rich, multi-layered sounds that we hear today are a result of a collaborative effort between Tonra and her bandmate/boyfriend Igor Haefeli. It is Haefeli, electronic guitarist and producer, who adds the emotive, ghostly soundscapes to tracks such as the broody ‘Love’ and the ode to young unrequited love that is ‘Youth.’

For a band that appears to have a very bright future ahead of them, it’s worthwhile getting acquainted with their already impressive back catalogue including Demos EP and the His Young Heart EP with notable tracks such as ‘Landfill’ and ‘Candles.’
