Live Review: WATCH: M.I.A 'Bad Girls'

6 February 2012 | 1:30 pm | Staff Writer

The new M.I.A video for ‘Bad Girls’ is kind of disappointing. We doubt it will get banned from Youtube, so naturally we feel a bit let down.

You’ve seen the intense video for ‘Born Free’ by M.I.A (yeah, the 9 minute one featuring the rounding-up and massacring of rangas, full-blown unattractive nudity and a dude being graphically blown to bits). So you know that M.I.A teaming up with director Romain Gavras for a second time is a big deal.

In comparison, the newly released video for ‘Bad Girls’ is kind of disappointing. It still has the political thing going on (set in the Middle East + traditionally dressed women looking badass - you get the ‘equality for women’ drift), but it’s half the length, is lacking a story, and is more of a typical dance video than a short film like ‘Born Free’ was. Plus, I doubt ‘Bad Girls’ will get banned from Youtube, so naturally I feel a bit let down.

In saying that, reasons why you should watch it include, but are not limited to: that M.I.A is a massive babe, her outfits are insanely cool, there’s a whole lot of drag racing in the desert, the cinematography is kickass and the song is fucking great. Still worth a watch, just don’t write home about it.
