Live Review: LISTEN: Twinsy EP Preview

15 February 2012 | 1:30 pm | Staff Writer

The new self-proclaimed D-list supergroup TWINSY features Guy Chappell (Yacht Club DJs), Michael Belsar (Hunting Grounds) and Ajax.

Two parts Ballarat bred animals, one part cross country producing maniac, TWINSY is the latest electronic lovechild to come out of the acclaimed Sweat It Out! stables. The new self-proclaimed D-list supergroup features Guy Chappell (Yacht Club DJs), Michael Belsar (Hunting Grounds) and Ajax (Under Your Sink / Bang Gang); all who have trashed equipment and stole girlfriends at multiple Purple Sneakers parties in the past.

So why should you get excited about these guys? It’s pretty simple really; each member brings their own distinct influence to the trio resulting in some of the most interesting tracks in the current Australian dance market.

Spearheading the programming side of things is Adrian Thomas, aka AJAX.  He’s one of Australia’s most renowned DJs and deservedly so, as his unique cut and paste style of acid House has earned him a myriad of awards - including Australia's Number 1 DJ, 3D Worlds Best DJ and Future DMA Best DJ.

But let’s not forget half of Australia’s most intense mash-up duo, Guy Chappell. As part of YACHT CLUB, Chappell has travelled up and down the country with partner in crime Gaz Harrison; serving up the most outlandish live shows going around.

And of course we have the musical chameleon that is Michael Belsar. Not only does this man co-front HUNTING GROUNDS, he was a member of the now defunct indie-pop group Neon Love as well as having his own collaborations and solo work.

The lethal combination of these three guys allows TWINSY to be an incredibly unique listen. The debut Self-Titled EP is an eclectic mix of house and old school disco, tied in with tropical influence and jungle beats. Belsar’s smooth garage-esque vocals act as the perfect vehicle to drive the tracks from generic club bangers to something with a little more substance.

Overall it’s a super fun and light-hearted affair and should be stuck in many a DJ set. Whether or not we’ll ever get a chance to see this in a live setting is yet to be determined, but we can always dream.

The Self-Titled EP is out soon via Sweat It Out! and we’ve stuck some of our favourite tracks below. Follow TWINSY on Facebook HERE.
