Live Review: LISTEN: The Faults EP

27 February 2012 | 4:30 pm | Staff Writer

Fuzzed out Sydney garage rock band The Faults are offering their self-titled EP as a free download - get it now before they start charging!

The Faults

Coming out of Sydney's Inner West, THE FAULTS are not your typical hipsters. Students by day, the duo recently recorded their first self-titled EP, produced by Australian music mainstay Darren Cross (from Betty Airs and previously of The E.L.F. and Gerling), creating their own cover art, and offering up the fruits of their labour as a free download from their Bandcamp.

Describing themselves as a "garage rock fuzz thingy duo", Oliver Holyoake and Tom Scarcella spent the last few years making their rounds on the local gig circuit, relying mainly on word of mouth to promote themselves before getting noticed in a big way late in 2011, when they were signed up to General Pants Co’s Major Label.

Despite being fuzzed out garage, THE FAULTS still have a very clean, clear sound. Oli's lyrics, belted out, are smooth and deep, drawing on old school blues-singer style of voice, lyrical and engaging. Tom's drumming keeps up a quick pace, not overdoing it but blending in perfectly with the banging guitar riffs to create something very Black Keys in the way that it makes you want to just jump up and start dancing along.
