Live Review: LISTEN: SBTRKT 'Pharaoh' (What So Not Remix)

17 February 2012 | 2:00 pm | Staff Writer

Sydney's What So Not have remixed SBTRKT. Our friends at Party by Jake caught up with them and got all the goss.

For those who are unfamiliar, WHAT SO NOT consists of Sydneysiders Chris Emerson (Emoh Instead) and Harley Streton (Flume). Together, they are responsible for one of my favourite club releases of 2011, 7 Dollar Bill EP. They are giving away their club edit of the SBTRKT anthem 'Pharaohs'. The re-rub allows for a handy extended intro/outro and features bright flourishes of sequenced 8 bit, a rejuvenated kick, and a few subtle percussive nuances and synth work that will keep the DJs happy. I recently caught up with Emerson to get a run down on their upcoming output:

"We've just finished a remix for Van She. It has a similar vibe to 'Love Theme' (7 Dollar Bill EP), but with Van She's awesome vocals, guitar hooks and pads. It causes involuntary female squealing!

Our upcoming Airwolf remix is our FAVOURITE to date, so much time and effort went into it. We've been working on it on and off for three months. It's got vocal hooks, big drums, a great melody chopped from the original, and a badass moombahcore breakdown! And right now, we're working on a Parachute Youth remix."

WHAT SO NOT have a second EP in the works but they are keeping their cards close to their chest at the moment. Although I'm told that if you head to one of their upcoming shows you will most definitely get a few sneak previews!
