Live Review: LISTEN: Blood Orange 'Forget It'

14 February 2012 | 10:00 am | Staff Writer

BLOOD ORANGE is the latest moniker of the Williamsburg-based Dev Haynes. With the mid-2011 release Coastal Grooves (Haynes’ first album release under Blood Orange), Haynes crafted a soulful electronic album peppered with 80s beats while underscored by heavy live guitars.

Before Blood Orange Haynes was both writing and producing for female skewed acts. Of particular, Florence and the Machine and that kooky little minx that a friend of a friend of yours is really into: Solange Knowles. These experiences have encouraged Haynes to sing from a female standpoint, but to also sing in a register more inline with the vocalists he was writing for.

The latest release from Coastal Grooves is ‘Forget It’, the opening track from the album. It just has the feeling of a great late-summer song. It makes you wanna sway with your arms around your cutie-pie; even if it does happen to be about an awkward ‘maybe we’re not meant for each other’ realisation. The soft beats and waterfall guitar riffs will be enough to make you just bypass that.

Check Blood Orange out when he opens for Florence and the Machine on their Australian tour later this year.
