JOHN MAUS' album 'We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves' is a collection of disturbing/beautiful ideas and images in musical form.
By day, JOHN MAUS is a teacher of political theory and philosophy and the University of Hawaii. By night, he has played keyboard for Animal Collective, Panda Bear and Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti as well as writing, recording and performing his solo project.
JOHN MAUS' 2011 album We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves is a collection of disturbing/beautiful ideas and images in musical form. MAUS uses all sorts of antiquated synthesisers, drum machines and other prehistoric gadgets to create dramatic pieces of music that lie smack-bang on the line between pop and insanity. His voice - the guiding light when listening to his music - is deep and dark, completely smothered with a dream-like reverb. The brilliant thing about JOHN MAUS is that he essentially writes accessible pop music but always manages to make it interesting, unexpected and thought provoking.
JOHN MAUS will be in Australia this summer for Sugar Mountain Festival and a string of tour dates.
