Live Review: Spotlight On Triple J Unearthed Harvest Winners

2 November 2011 | 2:56 pm | Staff Writer

Elizabeth Rose, Gung Ho and The Cactus Channel have been announced as the Triple J Unearthed winners for Harvest

The lovely organisers of Harvest have done us proud so far, shipping out some of the biggest acts doing the festival rounds this year including TV On The Radio, Potishead and The National just to name a few.  For those of us who have a tendency to show up early, lay some quality day drinking ground work and catch some of the less known acts - the Triple J Unearthed winners for Harvest have been announced.

NSW winner ELIZABETH ROSE comes as no surprise and after recently performing at this year's Parklife Festival she is no stranger to the big stage.  At only 21 she has made a name for herself, gaining momentum with 'Crystallise' and 'Throw Me To The Stars' on high rotation on Triple J and FBi.  She has a distinct talent for taking old worldly jazz tunes to a completely new planet any layering them with her hypnotic breathy vocals.

Check out her soundcloud for a bunch of free downloads of her tracks as well as her recent remix of Flight Faculties.  Is there anything she can't do?

Representing Queensland are the appropriately sunny GUNG HO.  You can pretty much taste the sea salt on their track 'Twin Rays' - it's a great mix of shoegaze and surf but with enough oomph to get a crowd moving.  With killer hooks and bass you can dance to and echoed vocals to get stoned to -there's really something for everyone here.

On the complete opposite end of the musical spectrum are Victorian winners THE CACTUS CHANNEL.  The band consists of 10 kids - yes kids, the average age is 17, blasting out raw 60s funk you can't help but swing your hips to.  If Mad Men, dirty horns and vintage tunes are your thing -keep an eye on this bunch.
