INTERVIEW: The Death Set

21 November 2011 | 2:37 pm | Staff Writer

We chatted to The Death Set about their DZ Deathrays Remix, their European tour, their move to Brooklyn, and of course their music!

We were lucky enough to have a chance to quiz The Death Set ahead of their highly anticipated stop in Australia regarding all that's happening in their music-filled worlds at the moment. We chatted about their DZ Deathrays Remix, their European tour, their move to Brooklyn, and of course their music! Read on to find out what they had to say...

PS: We covered your remix of DZ Deathrays' track 'The Mess Up' and the vid you made recently... what was it like to film? Would you do it again?

TDS: Hell yes, I saw, nice to see the homeland love.

Well... it was a two take shot. Bottle of Jameson and other treats devoured in those to takes. Was really quite enjoyable. We were a lil scared to be brutally honest but trained veteran experience won over in the end hahaha. I'm sure we will have an after hours, directors cut repeat in Australia.

You're currently on tour in Europe - how's it going? Are you getting a good reception?

Yeah its been dope. We are on a massive support tour. Shows are minimum 5000 people to 15000 people. It is very much a Christian in the Colosseum facing the lion type feel. In the start people hate. Like people boo before we even start, how retarded is that? But we just learned how to deal, and are like "Ohh Fuck me? No Fuck You!" and just spazs and the audiences have been very receptive.

There are so many awesome parties around New Years, how will you be spending the momentous night?

Probably recovering from Falls Festival the night before. Or more probably still going.

Any crazy fans/performance experiences recently?

We destroyed a drum kit on live TV for this show in America called "Fuel TV - The Daily Habit". They were not stoked hahaha... They also didn't use that take :) I as hoping for some "The Vines" on Letterman type shit!

While you're in Oz, will you take an extended holiday to visit friends and fam?

I usually do, but not this time just a quick pit stop. I am also vesting my interests opening a bar in NYC.

What foodstuffs are you most excited to be reunited with?

Cliche, but vegemite cheese toasty is the shit.

Do you have a fave type of venue to play? Big and crazy, or small and intimate?

At the start we really just loved the small more intimate venues. But really it was because it was easier to feel and procure an energy, and get raucous. But we have played so many different size and types of shows and are learning how to make the best and most of all of them. And to be honest it really depends on the crowd. Whether it be 5 or 15000. If they are up for a rad time it will be rad. If they are closed minded and douchey, it will suck. But I love the big ,awesome, crazy festivals. Pohoda Festival in Slovakia was a highlight this year.

You now call Brooklyn home... that's pretty darn cool! Where do you most enjoy living?

Yes BK rules. I love it here. For now it is right.  It is obviously an epicentre. People move here to do "something". Whatever that may be, and it fuels its own creative energy just by that fact. We also really love Paris. We tour there pretty much the most out of any city OS. Second home. So beautiful.

Have you had any awesome music finds of late? What are you digging?

I love our homies Cerebral Ballzy from Brooklyn. We thrashed a lil club in Germany together the other night. But I dunno, I listened to The Shangri -Las all day yesterday. Watched two Fellini movies today. Lots of old stuff.

If your songs could be featured on any tv show, what would it be?

E STREET!

We love your new Death Set tees... do the babes come with?

Thanks! Sex sells right? Well it's a free country, you would have to hunt, stalk and ask them ;)

You list Vodka as one of your influences... what matters most... quality or quantity?

Quality unless I have to play a show and there is not enough quantity.

Thanks guys! Can't wait to see you in a bit over a month!

Hell yes, very excited as always to come home.
