Live Review: ARIA Awards Wrap-Up

28 November 2011 | 8:24 am | Staff Writer

Our quick wrap-up of the 2011 ARIA Awards: congrats to Gotye, Kimbra, Boy & Bear and all the winners. Spotlight on Sydney's Set Sail.

Monday morning after the ARIA Awards can't go by without a post about it. We're not going to draw in too much on who, why or how (but really...), we just want to throw our congrats in to some of the artists we've loved to be supporting so far. Boy & Bear and Gotye were definitely the winners on the night, scoring themselves many trophies that will surely go straight to the pool room. Kimbra, Art Vs Science, The Living End and Cut Copy were also lucky enough to gain the recognition they deserve.

The award ceremony (and much loved red carpet) couldn't go by without some comedic antics. Triple J's Tom and Alex took it upon themselves to pay tribute to Gotye and Kimbra by dressing up as them in the 'Somebody That I Used To Know' clip. Good ol' Wally was as modest as ever, even posing for a photo with them on the carpet.

Speaking of 'Somebody That I Used To Know', the much talked about song and film clip exceeded expectations at the ceremony, gaining all parties involved awards for their hard work. Wally De Backer won Producer Of The Year, Francois Tetaz won Engineer Of The Year, and Natasha Pincus from Starkraving Productions won Best Video. The song also won Best Pop Release, Single Of The Year; and Gotye scored Best Male Artist. Not too shabby, really.

The other big winners for the night, Boy & Bear were mighty humble, as you would imagine. Gaining massive attention this year after their debut album 'Moonfire' and hit single 'Feeding Line', they won 5 awards on the night. The Sydney boys shot to fame after their cover of 'At Your Feet' was picked up and thrown all over the airwaves. In just over a couple of years they went from gigs at Oxford Art Factory to selling out The Enmore. Well done boys!

As well as paying tribute to successful and well known artists in the industry, the ARIAs gave the opportunity for young up-and-comers to show off their talents. One of such bands was a busking trio we've had our eye on for a little while, Set Sail. The Sydney boys gained attention busking in Martin Place and Town Hall, finding themselves quite a following. They pride themselves on their guerilla performances, which have found them arrested in Manila, rewarded them with 26 free beers on a Virgin flight; their 14,000 fans on Facebook aren't wrong - they're pretty damn awesome. After touring the US, they're now back in the country on their Chasing Summer Tour; if you like what you see in their ARIA video, make sure you catch them live.
