Major Raiser: The new socially aware party kids on the block

28 June 2011 | 9:57 am | Staff Writer

Major Raiser throw kick-ass parties that showcase Australian live music, raising money for youth charities. Next event in July features Parades & RUFUS.

Major Raiser are the new socially aware party kids on the block, an organisation you should definitely get familiar with! They’re a live music & creative arts initiative – a group of smart young things who host events which raise awareness and funds for various youth charities. Purple Sneakers had a chat to Dominic Greenwood about Major Raiser’s upcoming Sydney event ‘Major Raiser AYAC Party’ at The Gaelic on Saturday 16th July which features Parades,RÜFÜS, Bon Chat Bon Rat and heaps more!

You guys are putting on a kickass gig in July with Parades, RUFUS and Bon Chat Bon Rat to name a few –how’d you pick the stellar line-up?

Yeah it’s a freakin cool lineup we have for this one. We pick bands that we feel reflect our vision. If you look at a band like Parades who are really starting to establish themselves, and mix this with young dudes like The Lockwood’s and Boats of Berlin you find you have a great balance of well established and up and coming artists. This is something we’re really proud of.

What is ‘AYAC’ of ‘Major Raiser AYAC Party’?

AYAC (Australian Youth Against Cancer) is a youth charity that was established in 2009 by a 20 yr old cancer survivor. AYAC has raised over $50,000 so far and is doing a lot of cool & creative things in the process. We are stoked the proceeds from the July gig will be going to them!

One of Major Raiser's focuses is to showcase local talent - got any inside tips on upcoming bands we need to know about? Who are you listening to at the moment?

I would have to say a band like Boats of Berlin are definitely one to watch. The hype RUFUS are getting is also quite astonishing. I heard a really awesome track on triple j just earlier. It was called ‘Zimbabwe’ by New Navy and it had me bobbing my head up and down.

Bands like Megastick Fanfare and We Say Bamboulee also have their finger on the pulse in terms of knowing what people want to hear. There is a young kid called ‘POGO’ that is creating a hell of a lot of attention on YouTube. Check out his track ‘Alice’…it’s a cracker.

If I'm a band and desperately want to get involved - what can I do?

If you desperately want to get involved you’ll need you to get ‘Major Raiser’ tattooed on your ass. Ok…maybe that’s a bit much. We are always so keen to listen to bands and Dj’s so if you would like to play at a Major Raiser event then just shoot an email to ilanar@majorraiser.com.

Who is 'Major Raiser'? How did it start?

I would say we have at least 15 – 20 people collectively working on the Major Raiser AYAC Party. This is split into the creative team, marketing and promotions.

Major Raiser is a platform for anyone to jump onto if they are interested in making a positive impact on society, whilst doing things they love. A lot of people our age WANT to do something to help others, they just don’t know how. Who says you can’t drink, dance and enjoy a night out while still contributing to charity?

How can others join the team?

If you want to get involved simply email domg@majorraiser.com and let us know.

Also - just by coming to a Major Raiser event you are helping us out!
